Stability is the word for this past week. The weather has been stable and
the lake level has been stable. Lake level is 654.46, so we are just a few
inches above normal pool. However, with the constant (warm) weather the water
temperature has risen. Temperatures are 75 to 77 degrees throughout the lake.
This means that most of the game fish are starting to move looking for a
possible thermocline where they will spend the summer. The bluegills and
sunfish are still close to the banks and are easy to catch with bobbers and
worms. The crappie have started to move toward the deeper brush piles. Bobby
Garland Swimming Minnows in Blue Thunder and Crystal Minnow have worked this
past week swimming through the brush piles and around docks that have brush.
Crappie minnows on a colored jig head have also had some success.
Largemouth bass are hitting top water in the mornings on Zara Spooks and
Pop R’s. The best presentation is just fan-casting around a point.
During the day, the largemouth are sliding out into deeper water as the water
temperature warms so fish jigs or Carolina rigs with finesse worms or brush
hogs in about 28 to 30 feet water. Smallmouth bass have been scarce this
past week with the larger Smallmouth being caught late afternoon and at night.
Best bite is from dawn to 9 a.m. And again from 5 p.m. Until midnight . They
are using the drop offs and ledges as cover, and have moved out to 25 to
30 feet of water. Spider jigs, tubes and grubs have been the best baits.
Kentucky bass are still under the shad, pushing them to the top throughout
the day to frenzy feed. Pop R’s and Spit’N Image top water baits
are working well during feeding. Drop shot rigs are now triggering Kentuckys
under balls of shad during the heat of the day.
Walleye have been elusive this past week. The quality walleye are in 30
to 32 feet over the drop offs. Long liners are doing well with Deep Little
Rippers, Bill Norman DD14’s and Bandit’s Walleye baits. Bottom
bouncing with a nightcrawlers or a leech on a harness will work best early
morning and late afternoon/early evening. Night walleye are still moving
in close enough to trigger on Shad Raps and X-raps.
NIGHT TIME: The bass are biting very well at nighttime. It seems the best
time is from 9 p.m. To midnight . Jig and pig or tube baits are working great.
Secondary points and brush piles are holding the largemouth and flats and
main lake points are holding the smallies.
Remember to keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another
day. Rick Culver of Wilderness Trail does the research for this report
