The word for this week is “stable”. The weather
has been stable, the lake temperature has been stable, the thermocline
is stable and the water level has been stable.
Lake temperature has actually
cooled off a degree or so with the cooler nights, it is running 81 to
82 degrees throughout most of the lake. The thermocline is from about
28 to 32 feet, with most of the game fish, bass and walleye, hanging
out at that depth during the day.
The lake level is 652.26,
which is exactly 2 feet below normal pool. With light generation throughout
the week, this remained steady. The crappie are still feeding better
at night than during the day under floating lights. Bobby Garland Swimming
Minnow in Blue Thunder or Smoke have worked extremely well along with
crappie minnows on a colored jig head. The catfish are being caught
in the early evenings until after dark on nightcrawlers and chicken
livers in some of the coves.
Largemouth bass are hanging
around the thermocline in some sort of structure; brush piles being
their favorite. The largemouth seem to be in the brush piles during
the day as well as at night. They are also hanging out under floating
docks and around blow downs or tree tops. Texas rigged worms (strawberry
gold flake) have worked during the day around the brush piles. Carolina
rigs and football jigs are working around the tree tops and the deep
side of points that have some structure.
Smallmouth are in the brush
piles also. They are biting on Spider Jigs in cinnamon purple with a
purple trailer and Carolina rigged brush hogs or YUM Wooly Hawgtail.
The Smallmouth can be found on pea rock banks that have brush and chunk
rock banks with ledges. Kentuckys are traveling with the schools of
shad in 30 to 32 feet of water. Small spoons or a drop shot 4”
worm is your best bet.
Walleye have not changed
much this week, they are still near the thermocline in 28 to 34 feet
of water. The walleye have been caught this past week morning, afternoon
and evening. During the day the crawler harness or leech harness have
worked the best along with long lining Hot’N Tots, Reef Runners,
Deep Little Rippers, and Glass Shad. The best color this past week seemed
to be “purple”, and if it has a little bit of pink and/or
yellow, all the better.
Remember to
keep only what you can eat and release the rest for another day. Rick Culver
