Missouri Lakes Fishing
Report by Steve Wilson
Lake - Lake of The Ozarks 10/05/06:
Warm temps have made the fishing tough the last few days. But
cool temps headed to the Ozarks this weekend should put things back on schedule.
Lake level: 657.51 with minimum generation scheduled for the next few days.
This should hold the lake steady at 657.4 Truman lake: 704.42
Water temps have jumped up with the 90 degree days we have been having. Mid
70's is the average that I been seeing in most areas.
Dam and Gravois areas: Clear. This
warm front has really keep the shad down the last few days. This is making
the DD 22 the most consistent quality bass catcher. Shad colors fished 12'-16'
deep on structure with brush. Crash these baits into the brush to get a reaction
strike. If your having trouble locating brush on structure. Try docks near
points. Most of them have brush besides them. There is also some fish still
being caught deep on football jigs. Structure with brush from 20'-30'. Topwaters
also are very productive around docks and main lake points. Up the Gravois
there are a few fish starting to follow the baitfish. They can be caught around
shallow docks with spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs.
Glaize: Clear with some color in
the water above Bucks Marina. The best fishing in this area is within a couple
miles of PB2. The fish are doing a number of different things in this area.
You can catch fish on topwaters early than go to DD 22's and football jigs
after the mourning bite. The DD 22 and other deep divers fished into brush
around structure has been the best way to get quality. Remember there are
other deep divers on the market. Some that perform better than the DD 22.
So experiment. Get one that looks like the dead shad you see floating in the
lake. Some of the Japanese deep divers are hard to beat. Invest in a good
lure retriever!
Nianguas: Clear with stained water
in the upper reaches. The Nianguas served me up a very tough day Monday. Not
very nice of a river. I think the warm front had pushed the bait down. I should
of pulled out the DD 22 and went to work. But Cardinal baseball put a end
to that. Till it cools down a little. Expect to catch fish on mid depth cover
on crankbaits, jigs and deep diving crankbaits. Topwater are working early
in the backs of the pockets. You have to catch a lot of small ones to get
a keeper. Buzzbaits and spooks both a working.
Osage River: Clear around Hwy 5
bridge, stained from 45-60 mile markers and dirty from 65-85 then it clears
up again around Truman Dam. The bite in the river is suffering from the warm
temps also. It was just starting to get good. Hopefully things will be back
to normal soon. Big cranks baits such as the DD 22 fished on the drop offs
of main and secondary points is taking quality fish. They really hit it hard
in the river when you get it in front of one. Use heavier line to keep the
DD 22 from reaching its intended depth. 15-20# mono. Works on the drops that
are 5-12'. There are a lot of small fish and some keepers shallow around baitfish.
These fish can be caught on topwaters, spinnerbait and crankbaits early. But
the most consistent way to get them is flipping. It doesn’t really matter
to these fish what you chose to pitch to these docks. It is a matter of getting
you lure right in front of the fishes face. Rattleback jigs, creature baits,
tubes and 10" plastic worms. Use what you have the best experience with
and fish it hard and cover a lot of docks.
Thanks and Good Luck!
