Missouri Lakes Fishing
Report by Steve Wilson
Lake - Lake of The Ozarks 10/25/06:
Low water levels and falling temps have Lake of the Ozarks
bass on the deep stuff.
Lake level: 657.09 with minimum generation scheduled for the next few days.
This should hold the lake steady at 657.0 Truman lake: 704.21
Water temps range from 51 to 62 degrees.
Dam and Gravois areas: Clear. There
is still a good structure bite at 18'-35'. 1/2 and 3/4 Football jigs in PBJ
and watermelon. Bluff banks with deep ledges and points with channel swings
have been best. Stair step the jigs down the ledges and let them free fall
of the lip of the ledge. Deep cranks are also taking fish at 12'-16'. DD 22's
in lavender shad. Crash these baits into brush and stop them to get a reaction
strike. Look for brush besides docks near main points. Up the Gravois there
are a few fish starting to follow the baitfish. They can be caught around
shallow docks with spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs.
Glaize: Clear with some color in
the upper reaches. The Glaize is really clear and the deep ledge football
jig pattern is working here also. Main bluffs with deep water is the key.
Position boat over 30' and fish ledges from 15' down to 25'. DD 22's are also
productive. Fish points and brush around point docks. 12'-16' range is best.
Shad colors. In the upper Glaize some fish are biting spinnerbaits and jigs
in the dirty cool water. White/Chart for the spinnerbait and blk/blue for
the jig.
Nianguas: Clear with stained water
in the upper reaches. The Nianguas have been fishing a little funky with the
lower water levels. The best bite has been at the mouths the Nianguas. The
main river points with brush have been good for football jig and deep crankbait
patterns. This is also a great part of the lake to drop shot the ledges. Plenty
of bites if you are trying to practise that technique.
Osage River: Clear around Hwy 5
bridge, stained from 45-60 mile markers and dirty from 65-85 then it clears
up again around Truman Dam. The river is fishing tricky. Meaning if you aren’t
in the right area you are in trouble. Keep moving into you find active shad
and fish the points and docks around the mouths of creeks and move halfway
back into the creeks. Water color and temps are dictating lure choices. Remember
a jig is always good. Spinnerbaits are good. And crankbaits are hit and miss.
Those three baits will get the job done in the fall. Football jigs and DD
22's work up here. Use them on main river points. The fish won’t be
as deep 5'-12'. On the DD 22's use heavier line 15# to 20# mono to keep them
from diving to deep.
Thanks and Good Luck!
