Missouri Lakes Fishing Report by Steve Wilson

Lake - Lake of The Ozarks 02/07/07:

The one day of 60 degree afternoon temps didn’t do much to the water temps at Lake of the Ozarks. The ice in the coves keeps the shallows from warming. But it was sure nice anyway.

Lake level: 657.03 Medium generation is scheduled for the next few days. This will drop the lake slowly to 656.9, 656.8 the next couple of days. Truman lake level: 707.28 Both Dams have been running water. They are dropping Lake of the Ozarks for winter drawdown. But they also have more water than they want in Truman so that needs to be lowered also.

Water temp: Temps are around 37-40 degrees in the Bagnell Dam and mouth of the Gravois areas. Water temps are 37-39 in the lower Glaize and Main Osage from Toll Bridge to Hurricane Deck Bridge. The shallows in the backs of coves are frozen.

Bagnell Dam and Gravois area: Clear with stained water in the upper Gravois. The water temps range from 37-40 in the mouth of the Gravois and goes down as you go above Cedar Creek. With the falling lake level and the cold water temps. Most of the bass have pulled out to main lake points and bluffs with irregular features such as rock slides. Which makes them easy to find. Not really. There is a lot of points and bluffs in the lower end of the lake. But once you do find some that hold fish. They will be there till the lake warms up. Look for the points and bluffs that drop into the channel. The ones with the warmer water 39 to 40 degree water are best. Fish jerkbaits and football jigs slowly. The fish are suspended a little deeper in this area. So use light line to get your jerkbaits a couple feet deeper. The football jigs are working good on the bluffs from the rocks out to 30'.

Glaize area: Clear with stained water in the upper Glaize. The fishing is good in the lower Glaize. The water temps are 37- 39 degrees from PB 2 to Hwy 54 Bridge. Main lake points and bluffs are holding fish in this area also. Jerkbaits are working the best. Shad colors in Rogues and Lucky Crafts. Some of the baits that get a little deeper (into the 6'-8' zone) are working the best. There are a lot of fish suspended in this area but there is also some holding on the bottom that can be caught on a football jig in the same way as the dam area.

Osage from the Toll Bridge to Hurricane Deck Bridge: Clear with slightly stained water in the Hurricane Deck Bridge area. The fishing is better as you go down the lake towards the Toll Bridge. The water temps are way too cold above Hurricane Deck Bridge. Most of the coves are frozen in the backs. It is hard to find a fishable temperature. But there are a few brush piles on channels that are still producing a few jig bites even though there is ice 50 yards away. Even though I’ve been winter fishing this lake since 91. It still a lot of fun to catch these big fish in cold water.

Thanks and Good luck!
