Missouri Lakes Fishing
Report by Steve Wilson
Lake - Lake of The Ozarks 04/17/07:
Warm temperatures are back for the Ozarks. Bass are starting
to think about spawning again. The lake is 2 to 3 weeks behind schedule after
all that cold weather. So adjust your fishing. The lake is also coming up
after last weeks rains.
Lake Level: 657 with heavy generation for the next few days. Lake levels
of 657.2, 657.3 and 656.4 are predicted over the next few days. Truman lake
level is 710.
Water temps: 51-60 degrees.
Dam and Gravois area: Clear to stained in the
upper portions. The bite remains good in the lower lake. A lot of lures are
working in the varied water color and temps in this portion of the lake. But
jigs, jerkbaits and carolina rigs fished on secondary points has been the
way to catch the better fish. The jerkbaits and carolina rigs are best on
secondaries and the jig works great behind docks on channel banks. As far
as colors shad colors are working best for jerkbaits. Watermelon plastics
on the caralina rigs and brown jigs.
Glaize: Clear with really dirty water in the
back. The best fishing has been towards the mouth of the Glaize. Jerkbaits,
carolina rigs and jigs fished on main and secondary points to catch the better
fish. Inside the small creeks fish wiggle warts and chompers grubs on the
transition banks. If there is docks along the transition bank use the chompers
grub. No docks go with the wiggle wart. The jerkbait, carolina rigs and jig
colors are the same as the lower end. Chompers grubs in natural colors such
as pumpkin are working well. Wiggle warts in crawdad colors are best.
Nianguas: Clear to stained to dirty in some
areas. The cold front has put the water temps in check in this area. Upper
50's to 60 degree water in the Nianguas. They should start to get funky and
want to spawn in this section of the lake by the end of the week with this
seasonable weather. I don’t think they will lock onto beds. They will
be just cruising the pea gravel flats and tough to catch. Back off the pea
gravel to the first transition bank in front of the pea gravel to catch the
pre spawners. Wiggle warts, jigs, carlolina rigs and spinnerbaits work well
on these transition banks.
Osage River: Clear to stained and dirty in
some areas: The rise in water will spread the fish out in the river. Also
section of the upper Osage will warm up and the fish will go to the beds this
weekend or early next week. These males have been sitting outside the bedroom
waiting to spawn since the cold front. This week they are going to start making
beds again. This means the pea gravel will be full of males and the females
will be just a short cast away from that pea gavel. Look for a drop off, point
or channel bank near the pea gravel. Carolina rigs, jigs and wiggle warts
are great lures for catching the females staging. Plastics such as worms,
tubes, beavers and such will catch those males on the pea gravel. Texas rig
and flip them or carolina rig and cast them.
Thanks and Good luck!
