Missouri Lakes Fishing
Report by Steve Wilson
Lake - Lake of The Ozarks 06/13/07:
Continued heavy generation from both dams has left this lake
dirty and about half a foot from full pool. Patterns have remained the same
as last week with more fish heading out to their summer locations. Points
and structure related patterns have remained the same but the bite has been
stronger with more fish moving out.
Lake level: 659.4 with heavy generation scheduled for the next few days.
The lake is rising with levels of 659.4, 659.5 and 659.6 predicted for the
next few days. Truman: 714.35
Water temps 76-80 degrees
Dam and Gravois areas: Mostly stained with some clear water in some places
in the Gravois. There is a lot of current in the main lake. This makes the
structure fishing great. Ledges and points are good places to start. The ones
with brush are even better. As far as depth goes it changes everyday. Sometimes
the fish will be up shallow on the point feeding on shad and can be caught
on topwaters. When they aren't fish Carolina and Texas rigs. Take a mental
note of the depth you get the first good fish to bite and fish that particular
depth range. The large 10" Power Worms are catching their share of quality
fish right now.
Glaize: Mostly stained. All the current from the water passing through both
dams have colored up the main Osage and the mouths of the major creeks. The
structure fishing is good in this area also. The stained water brings the
big females up from the real deep water into the range where most people can
catch them. (4'-12') Main points, humps and ledges are holding the bulk of
the fish. Jigs, Carolina and Texas rigs are catching these fish. Use a larger
piece of plastic or trailer in this colored water. The fish are feeding with
all the current right now. If your not getting bit often you need to change
baits. It hasn't been hard to catch a bunch of fish but you still need to
keep an open mind. The fish will show you how they are relating to the bait.
Nianguas: Clear, stained and muddy in some areas. The structure bite is happening
here as well. Same baits as the lower lake. The difference is you will need
to hunt out the productive structure. But that is fishing. There is always
a lot of adventure in exploring new areas. This lake is nearly 100 miles long
and all of it has great fishing. The 8'-12' range is very productive on sunny
clear days. Where cloud cover usually brings them shallower where they can
be caught on topwaters. As far as plastics to use on the back of a carolina
rig or texas rig. It is hard to beat a 10" Power Worm or Zoom Brush Hog.
Get some natural green and brown colors and some darker colors. Use enough
weight to give you good bottom contact. 3/4 or bigger weight on the carolina
rig and 5/16 to 3/8 on the texas rig.
Osage: Stained to muddy but mostly muddy. With all the generation that is
taking place the Osage is pretty dirty. But that don't mean the fishing isn't
any good. Fish are also point related in this part of the lake. They are there
picking off an easy meal in all the current. But with the lake coming up the
fish will scatter in the flooded cover and take advantage of the baitfish
feeding on bugs in the new flooded cover. They can be taken on a number of
lures. But one that can be presented very softly in the strike zone.( Shallow
cover) usually works best. Small plastics texas rigged with light bullet weights
always catch a bunch of fish. Topwaters in the mournings and cloudy days in
the same areas are productive.
